My ears grew up in the underground. While most kids grew up listening to radio hits, I was forced to listen to MF DOOM, Wu-Tang Clan, and Madlib. The opening piano riff to "All Caps" was constantly stuck in my head and the "Shogun Assassin" intro in "Liquid Swords" was always on repeat. The auditory training that I endured as a child is what helped form what my sound is today.
